NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought responses from the Central Government and others on plea seeking direction to immediately ban the liquor in packaging.
A bench helmed by CJ Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi agreed to listen to the petition filed by “Community Against Drunken Driving” organisation which sought ban the sale of alcohol in tetra packs and sachets.
Advocate Vipin Nair, backing the petitioner, made a strong pitch for the standarization, adding that the State shall be accountable to protect the health of citizens.
“They are making perplexed by drawing similarities between fruit juice and alcohol through these packs. They use photo of apple and the pack contains Vodka.”
The plea has sought directions to Centre to frame a policy to all states and UTs in forbid the salre of alcohol in packaging, instead, adopt uniform bottle packaging.
It is lerant that the hearing weeks after the Apex Court defied to entertain the sinilar PIL challenging Uttar Pradesh’s policy of selling alcohol in tetra packs.
